Swayambhuva Manu – The Promoter of Religion

Swayambhuva Manu is said to have promulgated dharma for the first time on this Earth as per the description in the Mahabharata (Shanti Parva – 336 – 38 to 46). He is stated to have divided the Vedas into four sections. The teachings of Swayambhuva Manu took four streams, under the masters Bhrigu, Narada, Brihaspati and Angiras. All these are revered as Dharmashastra writers.

According to scholars, Swayambhuva Dharmashastra is the most ancient work and the precursor of later Manusmriti. Manusmriti is also known as Manu Dharma Shastra which literally translates into The rules of Dharma as prescribed by Manu. The Manusmriti (2nd to 3rd century CE) is the most studied and earliest metrical work of the Dharmaśāstra textual tradition of Hinduism.

Manusmriti is an vedic indian text which is originally composed by the Swayambhuva Manu at the starting of the Indian Vedic Civilization to be followed by the people of the society to live in a systematic way of life which is based on law and order as per according to the norms and customs of that period of time. Manusmriti is also known as Manu Dharma Shastra which literally translates into The rules of Dharma as prescribed by Manu.

The Manusmriti proposes various laws to govern human life and its code of conduct as applicable to each human individual according to his or her social class, duties, societal status and responsibilities. Over the 100s of years this Manusmriti has served its contribution as a source of law and helped to codify the law as per the morale of the society.

Another reference to Manu are the texts by Svayambhuva Manu, which include the likes of Manava Grihyasutra, Manava Sulbasutra and Manava Dharmashastra – which is the Manusmriti, or the rules of Manu. The Manusmriti is the fount of all Hindu law – and is seen as the most important and earliest work of the Dharmashastra, and the earliest milestone in textualising Hinduism.

The text in Manusmriti deals with the following sub-topics:

  • Creation of the world
  • Source of dharma
  • The dharma of the four social classes
  • Law of karma, rebirth and final liberation

Svayambhuva Manu, the spiritual son of Brahma, who is considered as the architect of laws pertaining to the followers of the Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism).

Regardless of where we had our upbringing in India, as Hindus, most of us have had some reference made to Manu – whether in passing, or in the mention of the Mansmriti, or even in the value accorded to the way an aeon is calculated. In most instances, we’ve associated Manu with the figure of a man who stood for the truth and all kinds of goodness, that there was simply no refuting his goodness – even for God, so much so, that his very deluge to destroy the earth did nothing to him. However, in many Hindu traditions and beliefs, there are a plethora of referential terms to the connotation of “Manu”.

Starting at the top, the most common reference is the allusion to a man who codified the fount of all natural law, in what we know now to be the Manusmriti. A man, named Manu, was of such purity and virtuousness, that there was absolutely nothing about him that could surmount to being a flaw worthy of godly punitive action. When there was a great deluge, a flood if you will, that destroyed the Earth, he was, for all practical purposes, the last man standing. He was, therefore, the progenitor of humanity, and codified a set of ethical values and rules for mankind to follow in the years to come.

According to a story, when Manu started prayers lots of God’s came like Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh etc. Everyone started convincing him for stopping the prayers and to take whatever he wants. Manu smiled, because he knew he had enjoyed all materials on Earth, he knows all things from the bottom, he was father of the entire human kind. So, he expressed his thought that he hasn’t willingness of any material from this materialistic world.

All returned, then lastly The Supreme Being Himself came in the face of sun, and provided the path of salvation to Manu. (As per The Bhagavad Gita, I recite this Holy knowledge to Surya, Surya told to Manu, and then rajrishis came to know this supreme knowledge, then pater it vanished from the Earth, now again I am telling you the same knowledge, dear Arjuna)

So, Manu got the supreme knowledge of The Bhagavad Gita, and The Bhagavad Gita was, is and will be applicable for all the people who are truly looking for it.

Version 1.0.0

The practice of Dharma is Karma. So, our karma should be based upon Dharma.

The most authentic Dharma Shastra text that can be used to practice Dharma today is the “Ishwari Dharma” or the “Vishwa Dharma” revealed in The Bhagavad Gita.

Lord Krishna says, “I have revealed to mankind the most secret Shastra — that is “Ishwari Dharma/Vishwa Dharma/Manava Dharma. It is beyond all scriptures (religions) of the world. He who realizes this Universal Dharma Shastra — that is Direct Vision of Truth (Divyachakshu) — reaches fulfilment.” (The Bhagavad Gita, 11.8; 15.16–20)

“Those who faithfully practice this Eternal Dharma through selfless, fearless performance of “Svakarma” for the welfare of all beings, and thus participate in My Divine Mission are exceedingly dear to Me.” (The Bhagavad Gita, 12.20)

When practiced with realization, this Eternal Dharma leads to love and immortality.

Vishnu – His Ten Main Incarnations

The majestic Lord Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu trinity, is not just revered for his cosmic dance, but also for his ten magnificent inarnations on Earth. Each incarnation, known as an avatar, embodies a specific purpose and plays a crucial role in maintaining cosmic balance.

Today, we embark on a captivating journey to explore these remarkable incarnations!

Our story begins with Matsya, the first avatar. Imagine a colossal fish navigating the turbulent waters of a great flood, carrying Manu, the first man, and a seed bank to safety.

This act of preservation ensured the continuation of life after a devastating deluge.

Next, we encounter Kurma, a giant tortoise with the weight of the world literally on his shell.

During the churning of the cosmic ocean for divine treasures, Mount Mandara, used as the churning stick, needed a sturdy base, and Kurma provided it with unwavering support.

Varaha, the powerful boar, emerges to combat the demon Hiranyaksha who had dragged the Earth (Bhumi) down to the underworld. With immense strength and ferocity, Varaha rescued Bhumi, restoring balance and justice.

Hiranyakashipu, the demon king, possessed a boon that made him invincible to all conventional means. To counter this, Vishnu manifested as Narasimha, a terrifying creature with the body of a human and the head of a lion.

This unique form, neither man nor beast, outsmarted the boon and defeated the demon.

Now, we meet Vamana, a seemingly insignificant dwarf, who approached King Bali for a seemingly harmless request: three paces of land.

However, Vamana revealed his true form, a colossal being, and with his three gigantic strides, reclaimed the three worlds from the demons’ control.

Parashurama, a formidable warrior wielding a mighty axe, was entrusted with the task of cleansing the Earth of corrupt Kshatriya rulers.

His unwavering commitment to righteousness redefined the warrior’s code, emphasizing ethical conduct alongside combat prowess.

Perhaps the most widely known incarnation, Rama embodies the ideal king. Through his unwavering commitment to truth, duty, and justice, Rama sets a timeless example of righteous leadership.

His epic journey, including his exile, battle against the demon king Ravana to rescue his wife Sita, and his eventual return to Ayodhya, continues to inspire generations.

Revered as a teacher, guide, and embodiment of divine love, Krishna is widely known for delivering The Bhagavad Gita, a scripture offering profound wisdom on life, duty, and spiritual liberation.

His playful demeanor, yet profound insights, continue to guide and inspire countless individuals even today.

Gautama Buddha was the prince of Lumbini who was moved by worldly suffering. He renounced his home life to live as a wandering ascetic in search of true awakening. He attained enlightenment and preached the teachings of peace, kindness, patience, generosity, and truth.

He is one of the most important spiritual masters of all time who founded Buddhism which now has a global following.

The tenth and yet-to-come avatar, Kalki is prophesied to appear at the end of Kali Yuga (the age of darkness) on a white horse. He is believed to restore dharma, ushering in a new golden age of righteousness and peace.

Though yet to appear, Kalki serves as a symbol of hope and a reminder that even in the darkest times, renewal and restoration are always possible.

Kalki Avatar – His Great Parents

According to Hindu Mythology, Vishnuyasha, a re-incarnation of Svayambhuva Manu, and Sumati Devi, a re-incarnation of Shatarupa are the great parents of Kalki Avatar, the tenth and final main incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the present Kalpa in the world.

Manu (Sanskrit: मनु) is a term found with various meanings in Hinduism. In early texts, it refers to the archetypal man, or to the first man (progenitor of humanity). Manu is a generic and honorific title indicating the “Father of the Human Race.” The Sanskrit term for ‘human’, manuṣya or mānava means ‘of Manu’ or ‘children of Manu’. In later texts, Manu is the title or name of fourteen rulers of earth, or alternatively as the head of dynasties that begin with each cyclic kalpa (aeon) when the universe is born anew. The title of the text Manusmriti uses this term as a prefix, but refers to the first Manu – Svayambhuva, the spiritual son of Brahma.

In the Hindu cosmology, each kalpa consists of fourteen Manvantaras, and each Manvantara is headed by a different Manu. Manu is the sole monarch of the Earth for a given period called manvantara. The current universe, is asserted to be ruled by the 7th Manu named Vaivasvata. Vaivasvata was the king of Damela before the great flood. He was warned of the flood by the Matsya (fish) avatar of Vishnu, and built a boat that carried the Vedas, Manu’s family and the seven sages to safety, helped by Matsya. The tale is repeated with variations in other texts, including the Mahabharata and a few other Puranas.

Svayambhuva Manu (Sanskrit: स्वयम्भुव मनु, romanized: Svāyaṃbhuva Manu) is the first of the fourteen Manus, the first man of a Yuga in Hindu cosmogony. He is the manasaputra (mind-born son) of Brahma and husband of Shatarupa (Sanskrit: शतरूपा, romanized: Śatarūpā, lit. ’she of a hundred forms’), the first woman. It is believed that Svāyambhuva Manu and Śatarūpā are the first human beings.

We all are the children of Svayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa, so we are called manushya, the Sanskrit term for mankind and the English word ‘Man’ that derives origin from the Germanic Mannus which stems from the same root as Manu. They are like Adam, Eve and even Noah of The Bible.

Interestingly, the same incident is noted in The Bible as ‘Man was created in the Image of His Maker!’

So, God and the first man relationship is like this:

Father and Son – God and Adam – Brahma and Svayambhuva Manu

दुनिया का पहला मानव कौन था ? मनु या एडम ? Who is the first Human on the Earth?

The creation of Svayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa from the body of Brahma are mentioned in the Puranas:

O sage, I [Brahma] split myself into two having assumed two forms. One half had the form of a woman and the other half that of a man. He then created in her a couple, the means of excellent nature. The man was Svayambhuva Manu, the greatest of the means (of creation). The woman was Satarupa, a Yogini, an ascetic woman.

— Shiva Purana, Section 2.1, Chapter 16, verses 10-12

According to the Bhagavata Purana,

While he was thus absorbed in contemplation and was observing the supernatural power, two other forms were generated from his body. They are still celebrated as the body of Brahma. Out of them, the one who had the male form became known as the Manu named Svayambhuva, and the woman became known as Satarupa, the queen of the great soul Manu.

— Bhagavata Purana, 3.12.52

According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana

The four faced Brahma, on being born, produced from His mind Svayambhuva Manu and his wife Shatarupa, the embodiment of all virtues. For this very reason, Svayambuva Manu has been known as the mind-born son of Brahma.

— Devi Bhagavata Purana, 10.01.7.14

According to the Brahma Purana, “To continue with Creation, Brahma gave form to a Man and a Woman. The man was Swayambhu Manu and the Woman was named Shatrupa. Humans are descended from Manu, that is the reason they are known as Manavs.”

After the first rounds of Creation by Brahma, i.e. the phase after creating the Devas, Asurs, Pitras and all else, Lord Brahma was completely exhausted. He decided to take a break. He wondered about the direction of his work so far and what would follow next, and just as he was reflecting on all that had been done till then, suddenly, from his body, there emerged a creature who looked a lot like him. This was the world’s First Man, Swayambhu Manu (Born on his Own). He was born with the Kaya or form of his father, Brahma.

Manu, Shatarupa Ka Janma

Svayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa had two sons named Priyavrata and Uttanapada, and three daughters named Akuti, Devahuti, and Prasuti. Manu married his first daughter Akuti to Rishi Ruci, his middle daughter Devahuti to Prajapati Kardama and his youngest daughter Prasuti to Prajapati Daksha.

Devahuti gave birth to nine daughters, and a single son named Kapila. Prasuti gave birth to several daughters including Khyati, Anasuya amongst many, and Akuti gave birth to one son named Yajna and one daughter. Both Kapila and Yajna, who were sons of Devahuti and Akuti respectively, were incarnations of Vishnu.

Svayambhuva Manu, along with his wife, Satarupa, went into the forest to practice austerities on the bank of the River Sunanda. At some point of time, Rakshasas attacked them, but Yajna, accompanied by his sons, the demigods, swiftly killed them. Then Yajna personally took the post of Indra, the King of the heavenly planets.

Svayambhuva Manu’s abode is Brahmavarta, with the town of Barhismati as the capital. Barhismati was formSvayambhuva Manu’s abode is Brahmavarta, with the town of Barhismati as the capital. Barhismati was formed when Visnu in his cosmic boar form (Varaha) shook his body, there fell large hair, which turned into the town.

In Svayambhuva-manvantara, Lord Vishnu’s avatar was called Yajna.

Jain theology mentions the 14th patriarch named Nabhiraja, mentioning him also as Manu. This, state scholars, links Jain tradition to Hindu legends, because the 14 patriarchs in Jain tradition are similar to the 14 Manus in Hindu legends. The Manu of Jainism is the father of 1st Tirthankara Rishabhanatha (Adinatha).

स्वयंभू मनु कुल का पूर्ण परिचय

According to Sri Rama Charitra, Svayambhuva Manu performed tapasya to Lord Vishnu for a thousand years, and when Vishnu appeared, Manu desired to have Vishnu as his son. Vishnu agreed and said that he would appear on Earth as part of the preservation of virtue, or Dharma.

According to Shrimad Ramayana, Svayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa performed tapasya to Lord Vishnu. On His appearance, they requested Him to take birth as their son. Lord Vishnu said that He is pleased by their devotion and He would take birth as their son during their incarnation as King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya respectively in Ayodhya during the Treta Yuga to destroy wicked Ravana.

दशरथ और कौशल्या पूर्व जन्म में कौन थे? who was the Dashrath and Kaushalya pre- born? दशरथ का जन्म।

According to Padma Purana, it is described that Svayambhuva Manu performed austerities at Naimisaranya on the bank of the Gomati River for acquiring the privilege of having Lord Vishnu as his son in three lifetimes. Lord Vishnu, being pleased with Svayambhuva Manu, granted the blessing that He would appear as Svayambhuva Manu‘s son as Lord Rama, Krishna, and Kalki.

Thus, Svayambhuva Manu would appear as Dasharatha, Vasudeva, and Vishnuyasha and her wife Shatarupa as Kaushalya, Devaki, and Sumati Devi. The incarnations of Svayambhuva Manu as Dasharatha and Vasudeva, of Shatarupa as Kaushalya and Devaki, and of Lord Vishnu as Lord Rama and Krishna have already appeared on the Earth in the Treta Yuga and the Dvapara Yuga respectively.

श्री कृष्ण लीला | देवकी वासुदेव की पुनर जन्म की कथा

Now, in the present Kali Yuga, Lord Vishnu is foretold to take birth in the form of His Kalki Avatar in the home of the same parents, namely Vishnuyasha (means God’s glory) as his father, who has been foretold to be a great soul and the most eminent person in his city and Sumati Devi (means the pious and pure thinking one) as his mother, who has been foretold to be a person with the knowledge of religious scriptures.
